According to a proposal brought to the parliament by Turkey’s ruling AKP last midnight, state-owned premises would be open for sale for the half of their values, which brought forward the question whether these properties would be assigned to the government-backed reactionary institutions.

A new motion to amend the Superannuation Fund brought to Turkey’s parliament Thursday midnight, after the car bombing hit the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) stipulates that state-owned premises belonging to the public institutions would be subject to the possibility of being sold for the half of their values.

The affected institutions include rooted organisations such as the Turkish Red Crescent, Green Crescent (fights against smoking, alcohol, drug use, etc.), Darülaceze (takes care of citizens in need such as the elderly and the handicapped), Darüşşafaka (provides equal education to talented children who have limited financial resources) and Turkish Aeronautical Association.

While the proposal brought forward the question whether these properties would be assigned to the government-backed reactionary institutions, Engin Altay, MP of the opposing Republican People’s Party (CHP), reacting to the new regulation, tweeted: “Wake up, Turkey! Benefits of the state-owned premises are being available to the Ensar and TÜRGEV foundations by a midnight motion.” Gülay Yedekci, MP for Istanbul from the CHP, commented: “AKP again came with a midnight proposal! Foundations will be able to sell the Treasury’s premises for half of their values!”

The Ensar Foundation and the TÜRGEV (Foundation for Service to Youth and Education of Turkey) are government-supported reactionary institutions, which have been frequently come to the public attention for the scandals such as corruption and child molestation incidents. The TÜRGEV is led by Bilal Erdoğan, the younger son of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

As a result of the discussion on the controversial proposal that continued yesterday, the motion brought by the AKP members was withdrawn without polling. AKP MPs then brought a new proposal that enables constitution of 49-year free servitude for the tenancy of the Treasury’s premises given to aforementioned public institutions.
