Ankara is sending notifications to Damascus and the United Nations about the progress of the military operation in the Syrian northern district of Afrin, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoglu said Saturday.

"We are notifying the Syrian regime, as well as all other sides, including the United Nations, about the operation in written form," Çavuşoğlu said.

Earlier in the day, the Turkish General Staff announced the launch of operation Olive Branch against Kurdish armed groups in Afrin. The operation started at 14:00 GMT.

Syria had warned Turkish AKP government against launching a military operation in Syria's northwestern region of Afrin and said that Syrian air defences stood ready to defend against such an attack.

In December, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a terrorist and said it was impossible for Syrian peace efforts to continue with him.
