A solution for Cyprus must on no account lead to the division of the island, Communist Party of Greece (KKE) Dimitris Koutsoumbas said on Monday after meeting Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras for a briefing on the ongoing Cyprus talks process.
“A solution means one state, not two states. A single, viable state with a single sovereignty, single nationality, single international identity, a common homeland of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots without foreign bases, guarantors and protectors,” he told reporters.
Pointing out that the Cyprus issue was a problem of invasion and occupation, Koutsoumbas noted that a negotiation leading to a solution meant, first and foremost, the immediate departure of all occupation troops and an abolition of the guarantees’ regime.
“The negotiation is today essentially undermined, first and mainly by the Turkish, the Turkish Cypriot leadership also, with the involvement of other forces and major interests, such as the United States, since it is essentially taking place on terms of a solution leading to division,” he said.
“The maximum possible watchfulness is demanded today, both from the people of Greece and the people of Cyprus,” Koutsoumbas added.
