While coronavirus pandemic is spreading across Turkey, bosses continue to disregard the health of workers. Bayburt Group, contractor of the subway construction in Bakırköy, İstanbul, discharged a worker after he shared the images of the bad working and living conditions. The worker showed that the lunch given to the workers comprised of spinach between a loaf of bread.

Turkey's PE (We Breathe Down the Bosses' Neck) Construction Workers Solidarity Network has issued a press release regarding the unhealthy conditions and layoffs at the Istanbul’s Bakırköy subway construction site.

The full statement is as follows:

INFORMATION ABOUT HEALTH CONDITIONS AND DISMISSAL OF A WORKER AT BAYBURT GROUP BAKIRKÖY SUBWAY WORKSITE

We want to share the latest developments in the Bayburt Group Bakırköy Subway construction site, which became apparent to the public with the “Spinach spread between bread” menu.

As it is known, after the negative conditions of the construction site were shared with the public, the first thing Bayburt Group company did was to find the workers who reacted and fire them, instead of correcting the conditions.

However, what was expected from the company officials after the negative images that were reflected from the construction site was to act immediately and make the working and accommodation environment suitable for health conditions. Instead, the company chose to hide the non-conformities that invited an outbreak at the construction site, punished the workers who drew attention, and tried to keep the bad news between the walls of the construction site.

We, as the Construction Workers Solidarity Network, will not remain silent about this irresponsibility. We continue to be the voice of the workers working on the job site.

We continue to follow Bayburt Group's Bakırköy Subway construction site:

In this context, we would like to give information about the latest situation in the dormitories of Ataköy İDO construction site of the same group that do not meet the hygiene conditions. As of this morning, Bayburt Group personnel, who have been staying in IDO dormitory area, have been moved to dormitories where the conditions in Incirli are better. However, the workers of companies that are subcontractors of Bayburt Group still remain in İDO dormitories. We posted images that are not suitable for hygiene conditions here yesterday.

The information we want to give about our dismissed friend is as follows;

Our worker friend was laid off without getting any receivables. We follow and receive our friend's receivables through the Solidarity Network's lawyers. We are also at the Neck of the Bosses, thanks to the volunteers of the solidarity organization working in different parts of Istanbul; our worker friend got financial support.

Further, many sensitive citizens who heard the subject in the public and social media expressed their support by reaching both our colleague and the Solidarity Network. Especially the worker-friendly Bakırköy resident citizens have contacted us and said they would not allow such a shame in Bakırköy Square and check out the construction site.

With Solidarity ...
