The ruling reactionary government in Turkey, AKP, declared that it will apply for a closed session in the National Assembly of Turkey on next Tuesday after Idlib incidents. General briefing on Turkey’s situation in Idlib and related private information are expected to be shared by the National Defence Minister, Hulusi Akar, in this planned closed session.

The request came after the latest crisis in Idlib. 33 Turkish soldiers were killed and 36 wounded in an airstrike in Idlib province, Turkish officials announced on Thursday. The Turkish government has decided to open its southwestern border with Syria for the next 72 hours.

The recent attack has been recorded as the deadliest offensive causing more than two dozens casualties of Turkish soldiers in a day in the province, the last stronghold of the Syrian jihadists backed by Ankara since Turkey first intervened in Syria in 2016.

“ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE THINGS TO HIDE WOULD NEED A CLOSED SESSION”

The General-Secretary of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), Kemal Okuyan, commented this closed session request to Halk TV, the main news portal for mainstream social-democrat opposition in Turkey.

Okuyan stated that “there is a picture concerning the whole society in Turkey. Our people and people in Syria are dying; the economy is being affected; thus, discussing these issues in a closed session means that they want to hide something from the people.”

Noting that this should not be accepted and they should speak in front of the public, Okuyan added that ”afterall, the Assembly is an institution where political parties are represented. People should see who defends what. Only those who have things to hide want to have a closed session; since we know that things related to national security will not be discussed there. It is not the way things work in Turkey; this closed session is not related to security concerns.”

“They want this closed session in order not to play to the crowd, which means they will declare something different to the people, and something else to other parties. This is wrong. Hence, the Communist Party of Turkey thinks that they should speak what they are going to say in front of everyone.”

TKP had issued a statement after the deadly incident in Idlib, calling for ending the war immediately.
