Syrian President Bashar Assad said on Sunday that Turkey's offensive against Syria's Afrin was along the lines of the country's policy which is built upon the support for terrorists.

"Turkey's brutal attack against the Syrian city of Afrin is inseparable from Turkey policy, that was pursued by the Turkish regime since the first day of the Syrian crisis and which is based for the most part on supporting terrorism and terrorist groups under different names," Assad was quoted as saying by the SANA news agency.

On Saturday, the Turkish Armed Forces together with the Free Syrian Army militants launched an operation dubbed "Olive Branch" against the Kurdish forces in Syria's Afrin.

As Turkish threats of a potential attack escalated last week, Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad warned that Syria could shoot down Turkish warplanes used in an assault.
