The faculty of communication at Cebeci Campus of Ankara University was vandalised by the reactionary mob on Friday. According to the sources, the aggressors initiated the fight by the excuse that some students in the cafeteria were eating despite Ramadan (the holy month of Islam when Muslims fast till sunset). Some of the aggressors yelled at students “you can not eat here during Ramadan!”, it is reported.

The mob stoned the journalism department building's doors and vandalised the library of the political science department. Some students were injured.

Security guards and the police on campus by stood the brutal incident, as is shown in a footage caught by a student. The group left the campus while chanting slogans and none of the aggressors were taken into custody following the event. The police, however, raided the offices of the teaching assistants and professors in the building of the department of communication.

THE AGGRESSORS RELY ON GOVERNMENT

The Enlightenment Movement made a public statement regarding the events happened on Friday in Cebeci Campus, saying “these aggressors draw their strength from the government in power”.

“The government which gives a 'fatwa' (validity judgement in Islamic jurisprudence) at every opportunity on how to organise the social life according to the rules of religion. The responsibility of this kind of a terror in universities is not only on a raving group of aggressors but also on the conservative AKP government that calls everyone to bend down to religious laws”, it added.
