More than a million Turks piled onto social media to call time on President Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday, making the word "Tamam" ("Enough") a trending topic worldwide after he promised to step down if the people wanted it.

Erdoğan, speaking to his ruling AKP party in Ankara, said his foes "have just one care – to destroy Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. If, one day, our nation says 'enough', then we will move to the side," he said, referring to himself in the first person plural.

Soon after the speech, "T A M A M" swept across Turkish-language Twitter, then became a global trending topic. More than 1.5 million tweets with the word "T A M A M" were posted by Tuesday night.

Last month, Erdoğan said the country would hold early presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24, a year and a half ahead of schedule. When explaining why he moved up the election, which was initially scheduled for November 2019, the president said that the switch to the presidential system of government, which would boost presidential powers and remove the post of prime minister, was needed as soon as possible.
