US, Britain and France on Tuesday vetoed a Russia-drafted United Nations Security Council resolution that would have set up an investigation into chemical weapons use in Syria following the alleged toxic gas attack in Douma.

Six countries including China and Russia backed the measure, while seven nations voted against. Two countries abstained. A draft resolution requires nine votes to be adopted in the 15-member council and no veto from the five permanent members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.

Earlier, Russia vetoed a US-drafted UNSC resolution on investigating alleged chemical weapons use.

On Sunday, Russia called for a meeting of the 15-member council on international threats to peace and security. Later the United States, France, Britain, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, Kuwait, Peru and Ivory Coast called for a meeting to discuss the alleged chemical weapons attack.
