In a meeting chaired by ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Istanbul Deputy Mustafa Şentop, a parliamentary joint commission decided by a majority of votes to revoke the seat of Faysal Sarıyıldız due to missing too many sessions of parliament, state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The commission will refer the case of Sarıyıldız, from the eastern province of Şırnak, to the general assembly for a final decision.

Another HDP deputy, Leyla Zana, also faces possible expulsion due to her failing to properly take her oath of office, as well as rampant absenteeism, after missing over 200 legislative sessions.

Zana spoke Kurdish while taking her oath of office in 2015, but the acting speaker said her vow was invalid. At the swearing-in ceremony, Zana, who won a seat in a parliamentary election on Nov. 1, began her oath by saying, "With the hope of an honourable and lasting peace" in Kurdish. She finished by changing the oath's official wording of "Turkish people" to "people of Turkey."
