A Turkish soldier died when an explosive device went off during a security search in northwestern Syria, the military said Friday.

Turkish troops and allied Free Syrian Army (FSA) seized control of Afrin city from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militants on March 18.

Prior to the latest death, 47 Turkish military personnel had been killed during the operation dubbed "Olive Branch".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to extend the operation to other YPG-controlled areas in northern Syria including the town of Manbij.
