The Russian military had been warned in advance of the presence of Turkish soldiers in the area targeted by the Russian airstrikes in Syria, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement on Friday.

The Turkish military said it regularly shared information with Russia about its operations in Syria as part of a deal in place with Moscow since January 12.

According to the statement, the Turkish soldiers were at the same location at the time of the strike as the day before [on February 8] when the Turkish side informed the Russian side of the precise coordinates following an 'accidental rocket strike' from the friendly positions in the Russian zone of responsibility.

The soldiers had been in the same spot for 10 days, the Turkish military said, noting that their position had been communicated to Russia's Khmeimim air base in Syria, and in person to the Russian military attache in Ankara.

"Our units hit by the (Russian) plane on February 9 have been located on the same spot for approximately 10 days. We immediately relayed the coordinates to officials at the Hmeimim centre... while the Russian military attache in Ankara was summoned to the General Staff HQ and given the precise coordinates again," the statement said.

"We must clarify the situation in connection with a statement by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in order to avoid any misinterpretation," the statement said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier said that the air strikes were launched based on coordinates provided by the Turkish army but that Turkish soldiers were not supposed to have been at the location.
