Turkish government orders 'media blackout' on train derailment coverage

Turkey's prime ministry office has ordered a temporary media ban Sunday on news coverage of the train derailment, citing national security and public order.

At least of 10 people were killed and 73 others were injured after a train came off the rails on Sunday in Turkey's northwestern province of Tekirdağ.

Authorities were quick to issue orders on how to cover the incident, forbidding publication of pictures of the accident site. 

The call for a media blackout after the disasters, attacks is symptomatic of a wider approach by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan government towards any critical media.​

Meanwhile, pro-government daily Sabah published a story on "some of the major train crashes that occurred in Europe and US in recent years." The story drew widespread criticism from the readers.
