Residents of several cities in Turkey banged pots and pans from their windows, a traditional form of protest, on Sunday as President Tayyip Erdoğan and AKP government claimed victory in a tightly-fought referendum. Illegal acts were being carried out in favour of the government in Sunday's referendum on expanding the powers of the presidency.

Video and pictures posted on social media showed protesters taking to the streets in several cities.

People gathered in the streets of İstanbul to protest the referendum results determined by fraud. There are pots-and-pans protests in Kadıköy, Bakırköy, Beşiktaş and  Şişli. Citizens chanted: “this is only the beginning, the struggle will continue!”

With 99 percent of ballot boxes opened, the "yes" vote for constitutional changes handing Erdogan sweeping new powers stood at 51.3 percent, according to the state-run Anadolu agency. The biggest three cities of Turkey including Istanbul, on the other hand, voted "no".

People gathered in front of the Supreme Election Board (YSK) in Ankara. Police took intensive security measures in front of YSK and did not allow people come near the building.

The pots-and-pans protests took place also in Ankara's 100. Yıl neighbourhood.
