A claim regarding ‘Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that the UAE funded the July 15 coup attempt in Turkey last year’ was made by pro-Justice and Development Party (AKP) government daily Yeni Şafak columnist Mehmet Acet.

In his column titled ‘The Gulf Country funded the July 15’, Acet stated that Çavuşoğlu, who attends as a speaker to ‘the Beyoğlu Meetings’ platform had mentioned the issue regarding UAE sponsorship behind the coup attempt in Turkey last year.

Acet wrote that they pricked up their ears when Turkish Foreign Minister had spoken of a Gulf country provided financial support for the July 15 coup attempt.

According to Acet, Çavuşoğlu said that "we know that a country has provided $3 billion in support to the coup attempt and efforts to unlawfully overthrow the government in Turkey. On the top of it, this was a Muslim country."

Pro-government columnist noted that this Muslim country funded the coup attempt in Turkey was the United Arab Emirates, as the Turkish Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu specified.

Acet also wrote that "Turkey’ President Erdoğan said that we know very well those who are pleased with Turkey’s coup attempt on July 15 in the Gulf", and added: "If somebody has intelligence services, we have it, too. We know very well how the countries took a stance at that night (July 15). We know very well the countries following the failure or success of the coup attempt. We know how they funded the coup.

In UAE ambassador’s hacked emails revealed last week had shown the alleged role of UAE in Turkey coup on July 15, 2016. According to the reports, John Hannah, the senior counselor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) and also a former deputy national security advisor to US Vice President Dick Cheney, allegedly sent UAE’s ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al-Otaiba, an article claiming that both the UAE and FDD were responsible for the July 15 coup attempt in Turkey, saying he was "honoured to be in the UAE's company".
