German Ambassador to Turkey Martin Erdmann on Monday was summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Der Spiegel magazine said Ankara wanted to raise a German parliamentary motion last year that declared the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman forces a genocide - a description that Turkey has long fiercely rejected.

Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency said the summons related to a previous incident where Erdmann had been unable to attend but did not specify further.

Germany ambassador Martin Erdmann had already been called in by the Turkish foreign ministry on Saturday over a rally in Cologne that Ankara said was organised by a branch of the armed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is designated as a terrorist organization in Turkey.

Germany's foreign ministry said it was the 17th time its envoy Martin Erdmann had been summoned.

Relations between Berlin and Ankara deteriorated following the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016. Ankara has accused Berlin of providing asylum for coup plotters, while Berlin has strongly criticized the detention of German journalists and human rights activists in Turkey. Another issue that undermined bilateral relations was cancellation of Erdogan's campaign rallies in Germany ahead of a referendum that granted the Turkish president more executive powers in March 2017.
