The Turkish army has deployed the last observation post for "monitoring ceasefire violations" in the Idlib de-escalation zone in Syria, the Turkish Armed Forces General Staff said Wednesday.

Turkey started setting up observation posts in October 2017. The agreements, signed between the "Syrian ceasefire guarantor states," Turkey, Russia and Iran, envisaged the construction of 12 such posts.

"The 12th observation post in Idlib has been set up," the General Staff wrote on Twitter.

There are currently four agreed de-escalation zones in Syria. The first in Idlib and parts of neighbouring Latakia, Hama, and Aleppo provinces; the second in the north of the central Homs province; the third in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus; and the fourth in certain parts of the country's southern Daraa and Quneitra provinces.

The agreement on the establishment of de-escalation zones has been reached by the "Syrian ceasefire guarantor states" as part of the Astana process for Syria. The agreement stipulated that the monitoring in the de-escalation zone in Idlib is carried out by Turkish, Iranian, and Russian forces, while the remaining zones will be maintained by Russian military police.
