İstanbul police Wednesday detained several leftist activists involved in demonstrations against the referendum frauds and electoral board decision.

There have been daily street protests in neighbourhoods in İstanbul after Sunday's referendum, which was marred by blatant violations.

The Freedom and Solidarity Party (ODP), a leftist party, not represented in parliament, said police had detained its İstanbul chairman Mesut Geçgel early Wednesday on accusations of "agitating the public" by claiming the 'Yes' vote was illegitimate. Gecgel had himself written on Twitter that he was being detained for protesting against the 'Yes' victory.

Geçgel's lawyer said that anti-terror police raided the suspects' homes before dawn, saying 16 people were detained so far but arrest warrants had been issued for 38.

Those detained are now reportedly being questioned at police headquarters in central İstanbul.

Erdoğan has claimed a narrow 51.4 percent to 48.6 percent victory in the vote.
