A Turkish court on Friday arrested a former opposition lawmaker over alleged links to the Gülen network, one of the masterminds of 2016's attempted coup attempted against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The move came a few days after Eren Erdem, a former MP from the parliamentary main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), lost his seat in parliament in the June 24 elections.

He is accused of publishing illegal wiretappings when he was the editor of a newspaper in 2014.

The charges relate to a time when Erdem was editor-in-chief of Karşı newspaper when a series of illegal audio recordings were leaked to the media by Erdoğan former ally, CIA-linked Gülen network during a 2013 graft scandal involving key government members and Erdoğan's inner circle.

Erdem will now remain in jail ahead of the trial. He risks between nine-and-a-half and 22 years in jail if convicted. State-run Anadolu news agency said the trial would begin on September 19.
