Statistical institute's unemployment numbers misleading: Turkish trade union

Research Department of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK-AR) evaluated the report of the state institute on April 2018 labour statistics, indicating that the official numbers are misleading.

According to DİSK-AR’s report, although the narrow-defined standard unemployment rate has dropped to 9,6% just as the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) says, unemployment purged of seasonal effects increased by 0,4 points and reached 10,3%. The number of people included by the standard unemployment purged of seasonal effects has increased by 103 thousand, reaching 3,291,000.

The number of the broad-defined unemployed was 5,872,000, their rate is 17,3%. It was also stated in the report that the rate of unemployed women was 12,6%, while that of unemployed young women was 22%. What is more, it was said that more than 2,5 youngsters were unemployed in Turkey.

1,5 million of the unemployed population was comprised of those who do not look for a job but ready to work, and 1 million 38 thousand of those are comprised of women, while 538,000 people have lost their hopes to find a job.
