The Peace Committee of Turkey, the international peace organization of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), has issued a statement regarding recent developments in Syria. In the statement, the Peace Committee of Turkey said, “The war atmosphere created in Syria must be thwarted. Our people should not submit to the escalated warmongering policies and nationalism. No matter what the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) does, the majority of Turkish people stand with peace.”

The Peace Committee also underlined that the last week’s trilateral summit among Russia, Turkey and Iran does not mean that “Turkey changes side”.

CAPITALIST TURKEY CANNOT LEAVE NATO

Stating that the AKP government strengthened its hand with the Afrin operation in Syria against the United States and other imperialist countries, thus aiming to drive a harder bargain with the imperialist camp by using it as a trump card, the Peace Committee noted that the economic relations of Turkish capitalism with the West is so strong that it does not have any capability to diverge in the short-term, saying it is impossible for the capitalist Turkey to leave the West or NATO.

Underlining that an axis formed by the two powerful capitalist states –Russia and Iran– cannot provide a solution due to its capitalistic nature, the Committee stated that such a capitalist axis, therefore, cannot be a remedy for the liberation of either Syrian people or any other countries’ people.

Pointing out the scale of nuclear risk posed by the nuclear power plant to be built in Akkuyu in Turkey’s southern province of Mersin, the Committee also emphasized the danger of nuclear armament.

THE FUTURE OF KURDISH LABOURERS CANNOT BE SURRENDERED TO IMPERIALISM

Noting that the Kurdish nationalist movement against the AKP government has relied upon the U.S. imperialism, the Peace Committee of Turkey underlined that this stance unacceptably means the subjugation of the Kurdish labourers’ future in Turkey and other countries to imperialism.

Stating the U.S. once again demonstrated with the occasion of Afrin operation that an imperialist power cannot be trusted, the Peace Committee pointed out, “The sole remedy of the liberation of Syrian people is the preservation of territorial integrity of Syria and the determination of peoples’ own destiny. The interference in internal affairs of Syria must stop, and all the foreign forces in the region must leave the country by handing over the territories they have kept under control to the Syrian government.’’

MAJORITY OF TURKISH PEOPLE STAND WITH PEACE

“The war atmosphere created in Syria must be thwarted. Our people should not submit to the escalated warmongering policies and nationalism. No matter what the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) does, the majority of Turkish people stand with peace. The problem is that the progressive and peace-loving potential of the people has not been sufficiently organized while being suppressed by the bourgeois political parties. The Peace Committee of Turkey will continue to contribute to enlighten and organize the people,” the Committee concluded its statement.
