The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee Rights (UNHCR) reported the number of deaths of asylum seekers trying to reach Europe by sea in 2018.

In the report, the number of asylum seekers trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe in 2018 was 139 thousand 300, the lowest of the last 5 years.

Last year, at least 2 thousand 275 asylum seekers in the Mediterranean were lost or died. The recent report showed that an average of 6 people died per day in 2018. 

In 2018, 54 thousand 800 asylum seekers reached Spain and 23 thousand 400 asylum seekers reached Italy by sea, it is reported.
