Record rise in applications for unemployment status

Number of people who applied for unemployment status in January 2017 is 23% more than the respective number for January 2016

Turkish Employment Agency (İŞ-KUR) announced that the number of people who applied for unemployment status in January 2017 is 23% more than the respective number for January 2016. The number of people who applied for unemployment pay also increased by 12.8% with respect to December 2016.

In October 2016, the unemployment rate became 11.8% and hit the highest record for the last 6 years. According to TURKSTAT data, 3 million 647 thousand people are unemployed.

INCREASE IN APPLICATIONS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT PAY 

In Turkey, workers can get unemployment pay if they apply within 30 days after they are dismissed. It is reported that the number of people who applied for the unemployment pay in January is 12.8% higher than the number of people who applied in December 2016. 158,046 people applied for unemployment pay in January 2017.

Applications of unemployed people to Turkish Employment Agency (İŞ-KUR) for unemployment status are done for assistance by İŞ-KUR in the job-seeking process. According to the data, 237,656 people applied to the Agency for unemployed status in January 2017, which is 23,5% more than the respective number for the same month last year.
