Fascist and reactionary forces continue to spark provocations and attack left-wing students at universities in the run-up to the referendum on April 16.

On March 20, a fascist group attacked the members of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) at İstanbul University/Beyazıt Campus during a propaganda work for the ‘no’ choice regarding the upcoming referendum.

FASCIST PROVOCATIONS AGAINST STUDENTS

Another fascist provocation took place the next day, on March 21. The fascist group entered the campus under the pretext of celebrating Nowroz with such provocative title as “the Turks’ Spring Festival” while the private security did not allow the university students to enter the central campus.

Blocked by the security to enter the central campus, progressive and left-wing students started a political work at the faculty of literature, saying ‘no’ to President Erdoğan’s and his Justice and Development Party’s proposal of constitutional amendments that will be voted on April 16.

PROVOCATIONS CANNOT PREVENT ‘NO’ CHOICE

The left-wing students distributed leaflets around the faculty of literature. Pointing to escalating fascist provocations, the leaflet read: “An attempt of provocation has taken place at our university. Attacking the students at various universities for many days and the students of İstanbul University who have carried out works of ‘no’, a gang is holding a provocative activity at the central campus.”

Referring to the role of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in fascist attacks, the left-wing students’ leaflet continued: “These attacks taking place at İstanbul University or other universities are not doubtlessly independent from the political atmosphere in the country. These attacks against the university students who say ‘no’are organized by the ruling power in order to consolidate the right-wing base for the referendum.”

Declaring to continue their resolute struggle, the students concluded: “As the university students, we do not accept the role that is offered us in this theatre. We will continue to say ‘no’. Nobody can prevent us. The university students will continue to say and raise the voice of ‘no’.
