The only objective that was completed a hundred percent was “organising Islamic memorial services in 81 cities for the commemoration day of Çanakkale victory”. Minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya was denied entrance to the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam, with Dutch police blocking her car.

Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Policies published its annual report for the year 2016. The report revealed that many objectives set for 2016 could not be completed at all. Among the objectives related to women, children, disabled, elderly, martyrs’ relatives and veterans, only one subject could be attained. The only objective that was completed a hundred percent was “organising Islamic memorial services in 81 cities for the commemoration day of Çanakkale victory”.

According to the report, the reasons for the failure in realising the objectives are that the ministry focused its attention on the martyrs and veterans of the July 15 coup attempt and that the national mourning took a long time. The ministry also thinks that the unsuccessful general picture revealed by the report is a result of “the fact that the motivations of the working people have been low”.

DURING THE MINISTRY OF FATMA BETÜL SAYAN KAYA

According to the sources, during the ministry of Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya 476 children were sexually abused and child suicides have been increased due to child marriages. According to a report published by Education and Science Workers’ Union (Eğitim-Sen), 600 thousand girls were not sent to school within the year 2016.

From the date Kaya was appointed as the minister, November 17, 2015, until today, at least 455 women had been murdered. The half of the total number of murders had been during the state of emergency period in 2016.

Turkey has fallen back to 130th from 125th in the list of gender equality that includes 144 countries in total. Moreover, after the coup attempt, the primary reason given by the ministry for its failure, the government closed many non-governmental organisations helping women and children.
