Occupational murders on increase

A recent report published by the Workplace Safety and Health Council (ISIG) puts forward the gravity of the working conditions in Turkey

The report underlines that the conditions became more severe during the state of emergency held after the attempted coup d’état of July 15th.

The report mentions that the number of monthly occupational murders was 153 prior to the declaration of the state of emergency while this mounts to 171 in that period. 513 workers died from July 21st to October 21st, which covers the first period of the emergency state that was extended on October 3rd.

The report underlines that the main reason behind the increase in occupational murders is the oppression on the workers’ organizations and workers’ resistances.

The report points that the oppression on media due to state of emergency and arbitrariness of the decision making procedures prevent them from gathering full information about the occupational murders. The ages of the 11 % of the workers are unknown.

DEFENDING WORKERS' RIGHTS BECOMES A PRETEXT FOR FIRING

One of the representatives of the ISIG, Cemal Bilgin, has been fired from the Istanbul University Capa Hospital (Istanbul) for revealing that the workers who were intoxicated due to lunch provided in the hospital stemmed from salmonella typhi. Tarik Yuce, another representative of ISIG, was fired for sharing information on occupational murders on social media.

Number of occupational murders exceeds that of ordinary ones in 2015

Another report published by the ISIG on July states that the number of occupational murders has exceeded that of ordinary murders. In 2015, the number of registered murders was 1542, while that of occupational murders was 1703.

PAKISTANI WORKER DIES IN A RACK PLANT

Around the time the report was released, a Pakistani worker lost his life in a rack plant in Istanbul. Muqaddar Ali died in Sancaktepe (Istanbul) due to a fall of a three-meter wooden plaque weighing 200 kg’s. Police carries out an investigation about his death.
