The gunman suspected of killing 39 people in an İstanbul nightclub on New Year's Day has been caught in the city's Esenyurt district, Turkish media reports said on Tuesday. 

The suspect was found along with his four-year-old son in an apartment after Turkey's police operation. He had been staying in the house belonging to a Kyrgyz friend. The homeowner was also detained, TRT television reported. State-run Anadolu news agency said a total of five people were detained in the operation, including three women.

The suspect was caught in an operation jointly carried out by the Turkish police and the spy agency MİT.

At least 39 people were killed, including more than 20 foreigners, almost 70 were injured as a result of the attack on İstanbul's Reina nightclub. On Jan. 1, the attacker shot his way into the Reina nightclub then opened fire with an automatic rifle, reloading his weapon half a dozen times and shooting the wounded as they lay on the ground.

Intelligence services and anti-terror police in İstanbul had identified him as a 34-year-old Uzbek who was part of a Central Asian IS cell, media reported on January 8. 
Anadolu news agency identified the detained man as Abdulgadir Masharipov.
