NATO chief Stoltenberg to visit Turkey on April 15-16

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will travel to Turkey on April 15-16 to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli, the alliance said in a press release on Friday.

"On Sunday, 15 April and Monday, 16 April 2018, the NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jens Stoltenberg will travel to Turkey. On Monday, the Secretary General will have a meeting with the President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He will also meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and the Minister of Defence, Mr. Nurettin Canikli," the press release read.

On April 12, responding to a question regarding the possible use of the İncirlik air base in Turkey for a possible U.S. attack on Syria,Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hami Aksoy said that during Stoltenberg's visit, the issue surrounding the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey, where the US Air Force is stationed, would be discussed.

Asked if Turkish AKP government will lend support to its military operation if the U.S. attacks Syria, Aksoy said: "We continue maintaining contacts with the United States. [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan holds telephone conversations, we will continue to closely monitor the development of the situation. Let’s see what the developments show us."
