German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday she would raise the issue of EU-Turkish relations during European Council on October 14-19 in the Belgian capital of Brussels.

"For sure, we will not take any decisions, but I would like to hear the opinions of my colleagues, how they are viewing bilateral relations with Turkey and what conclusions we can draw from that," Merkel said in her podcast.

Turkish-EU relations have significantly deteriorated after the 2016 attempted coup in Turkey.

Turkey does not need the European Union, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Oct. 13. "If you're honest, make your statement and we will finish the job. We don’t need you," Erdoğan said during an address to provincial representatives from his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Ankara.

In early October, Erdoğan said that Turkey would lose nothing if Brussels refused to grant the country membership in the European Union, and would follow its own path.
