Iran will completely shut its borders with Iraqi Kurdistan if the autonomous region splits with Baghdad following the upcoming independence referendum, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said Sunday.

"Iran definitely recognises only the united, integrated and federal government of Iraq. Any disruption to this strategic principle will lead to a serious reconsideration and change of the ongoing cooperation between Iran and the Kurdistan region," Shamkhani told IRIB broadcaster.

He stressed that Iran would even end all agreements with the Kurdistan Region if carried on with its independence plan.

Shamkhani added that an independent Kurdistan would compromise regional security, urging Erbil to give the plebiscite a second thought and revise its decision.
