Hunger-striking academic Nuriye Gülmen on Tuesday delivered a message to the public by means of her lawyer Şahap Örsal. Gülmen said "Emphasising that I am on hunger strike for 239 days or that I am in prison has no importance. This will end when I am admitted back to my job."

Stating that Gülmen is in the positive mood and her consciousness is clear, Örsal said "The lights are on 24 hours in her room and thus she is not able to get good sleep. The lack of hygienic conditions is another problem. The corridor facing her room is a shared space and her room barely gets sunlight. These conditions may not be unbearable for a common prisoner, but they are quite risky for someone in Nuriye's conditions."

Örsal also noted that the main concern of Gülmen is forced intervention, adding that it should be the patient's decision.

Gülmen delivered a message to the public by means of her lawyer Örsal, saying "Emphasising that I am on hunger strike for 239 days or that I am in prison has no importance. I want my job back. This will end when I am admitted back to my job. This is my wilful decision and it keeps me strong. I have no demand other than that."

Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça are two educators dismissed from their jobs with the statutory decrees of the AKP government. They were imprisoned on the 75th day of their hunger strike. The court released Özakça on condition that he wears an ankle monitor. Gülmen, who has been hospitalized due to her worsening health, was ordered to remain in custody until the trial, which resumes on Nov. 17.
