The delegation of the World Peace Council and the International Federation of Democratic Youth, which condemned the imperialist and reactionary intervention in Syria from the very beginning, started their planned visit to various institutions in Damascus.

The delegation has been visiting Syria to receive information from the authorities and share their solidarity as the peace and youth movements they represent.

Nearly 100 delegates from over 40 countries came together in Damascus as part of the visit today, October 29. One delegate from the Peace Committee and one from the Communist Youth of Turkey have been representing Turkey.

The delegates representing Turkey met with Foreign Minister Walid Muallem today as part of an ongoing solidarity visit to Damascus. The meeting held in the conference hall of the Ministry continued with messages and questions after a presentation made by Muallem.

Aydemir Güler, as the Peace Committee representative at the meeting, said that the people who insist on protecting their Republic today in Turkey can very well understand the people in Syria who are fighting against imperialism and reactionary forces.

Muallem greeted the people of Turkey with an October 29, Republic Day message of peace and friendship. As his last sentence in the message, he said that "I suggest the people of Turkey return to the values of the Republic Atatürk founded instead of following [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan's regime."

Turkey celebrated the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey. The official proclamation of the Republic by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk took place on Oct. 29, 1923, when the name of the nation and its status as a republic were declared.
