German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yücel left İstanbul Friday on a German government plane following his release from jail.

He was freed from prison earlier on Friday following an order by an Istanbul court which received an indictment from prosecutors that seeks a prison sentence of up to 18 years for him.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, who met Chancellor Angela Merkel for talks in Berlin on Thursday, earlier this week had raised the prospect that Yücel could soon be freed.

Yücel, a correspondent for the German daily Die Welt, was arrested in Istanbul on Feb. 14, 2017.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said the court-ordered release was "unconditional", meaning Yücel would be able to leave the country.
