The foreign ministers of Germany and Turkey have held informal talks as the two countries try and repair their strained relations.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu tweeted Saturday they met in Turkey "informally to discuss bilateral relations, including the difficult issues and mutual expectations."

The meeting came a day after the announcement of the release of a further German national who had been detained in Turkey.

Multiple issues have caused friction between the two countries in recent months, including the jailing of several Germans on terrorism-related charges in Turkey following a failed coup attempt. Turkey has accused Germany of harbouring supporter of an outlawed PKK militant group. In September, the German ambassador to Turkey was summoned by the country's Foreign Ministry over the Kurdish festival in Germany's Cologne, which was allegedly organised by a PKK branch.

On Saturday, clashes broke out between German police and pro-Kurdish protesters at a rally in the city of Dusseldorf on Saturday, local media reported, citing police. Rally's participants were not allowed to bring banners or flags with the PKK symbols or the pictures of its jailed leader Abdullah Öcalan to the rally.
