Five children were among the 12 people killed after a plastic boat carrying 22 Syrians to Greece sunk off Turkey's Aegean coastal town of Kuşadası on Friday.

The bodies of the dead, also including two women, were discovered along the shore in the western province of Aydın. Seven others were picked up alive, the agency said, adding that all of those on board were Syrian refugees.

Two Turkish suspected people-smugglers who had been on the boat were also detained.

Just 3,629 refugees and migrants have crossed to Greece from Turkey so far this year, according to the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, and about 60 arrive on Greek islands each day. At least 173,000 people, mostly Syrians, arrived in 2016.
