FEMICIDE: VIOLENCE, SEXUAL ABUSE AND MURDERS AGAINST WOMEN INCREASED WITH AKP

Research shows that violence against women has increased 1400% under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) between 2002-2012 in Turkey. Thousands of women were murdered, and yet more thousands confronted systematic violence and sexual abuse.

Misogynist policies of the Islamist ruling party (AKP) have led to a massive growth in femicide in Turkey. Under the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who usually states that he does not believe in the equality of women and men, fundamental civil rights of women have been undermined.

AKP’s approach on such debates as right to abortion and laws regarding sexual abuse has stimulated misogyny and led to an increasing trend of femicide within the Turkish society.
