An assistant medical doctor, working in Katip Çelebi University in İzmir, committed suicide after his expulsion with a decree issued under emergency rule on Saturday.

It is claimed that Orhan Çetin, 28, fell into depression after suspension decision. Çetin jumped from the tenth story of the hospital building he was working and lost his life.

HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT BANNED COMMEMORATION CEREMONY

The director of the İzmir branch of the Union of Health and Social Service Workers (SES) claimed that the hospital management did not allow organising a commemoration ceremony for Orhan Çetin. He stated that the union would make an allegation against the management to Turkish Medical Association.

PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM TURKISH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

Turkish Medical Association (Türk Tabipler Birliği, in Turkish) made a public statement about the suicide and death of the young doctor, Orhan Çetin. The association stated that the coup attempt has been turned into an opportunity by the government in order to maintain its power.

The statement of the association clarifies that “Orhan Çetin is one of the 2,723 doctors suspended with statutory decrees” issued during the state of emergency declared after the coup attempt of July, 15. It is also stated that this state of emergency must be ended immediately and all the employees suspended unjustly and unlawfully must return to their jobs.

Emergency rule enables the government to bypass parliament in enacting new laws and to limit or suspend rights and freedoms when deemed necessary. It was imposed after the attempted coup and then extended for a second three-month period in October.
