The Communist Youth of Turkey (TKG) has made a statement on November 16 in support of the workers of Ege University, in the western city of İzmir, who will become unemployed because of university administration’s decision to not to renew the working contracts.

"The Ege University rector office announced that the contract of 57 workers among 501 workers member to the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) would not renew under the pretext of economic reasons," the TKG said with reference to the subcontracted workers in the service sector of Ege University who will be exposed to unemployment.

Pointing out to the role of Ege University in cooperation with anti-worker practices of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Communist Youth said, "We warn the rector office that attempts to rule Ege University as a commercial company! The labourers as the essential components of the university cannot be exposed to unemployment due to such arbitrary adjustments."

The Communist Youth concluded its statement with a call on all the students to support the meeting and press release that will be held on Nov. 17 in front of the main entrance to the main campus of Ege University with the attendance of trade union DİSK members.
