Communist Party of Turkey meets with workers on anniversary of great workers' resistance

Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) organised meetings with workers in İstanbul and Gaziantep on the anniversary of the Great Workers’ Resistance of June 15-16, 1970

TKP have met with workers in many districts of İstanbul on the 47th anniversary of the biggest worker protest in Turkey.

In Kartal district, workers from metal sector came together. In the opening speech, TKP Central Committee member Mehmet Kuzulugil said that the working class cannot confine themselves to demanding for their rights and have to struggle for a new system. The workers talked about the increasing pressure, recent bans on strikes and their resistance in workplaces.

In Kadıköy, the airlines' workers attended the meeting in Nazım Hikmet Cultural Center. TKP Central Committee member Volkan Algan talked about the pressure on the workers of Turkish Airlines and said the organised struggle is the only solution. 

In Şişli, workers from construction and health sectors as well as the plaza and office workers attended the meeting and talked about their problems in the workplaces.

There were similar meetings in Beşiktaş, Arnavutköy and Bakırköy. Also in Gaziantep, a south-central city of Turkey, workers commemorated the Great Workers’ Resistance.

In June 15-16, 1970, the biggest worker protest in Turkey took place against the change of labour union law. Around 150 thousand workers actively participated in the protests by marching and gathering on the streets of İstanbul. The attack of police and military forces resulted in 3 deaths and over 200 injured.
