U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo will visit Turkey on Thursday in his first overseas visit to discuss security issues, including Turkey's fight against a network led by a U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, one of the masterminds of July's coup attempt, Turkish officials said.

Pompeo's visit was decided during a 45-minute telephone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan late on Tuesday.

Pompeo would also discuss the issue of U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish militants which Ankara sees to be terrorists because of their affiliation with armed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Turkey.

Turkey's government wants the Islamic preacher Fethullah Güen, extradited from the United States. It is also demanding that Washington stop backing the Syrian Kurdish groups.
