A Turkish court sentenced the parliamentary main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu to pay around 44 thousand US dollar in compensation for “insulting” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the documents on the money transfer to the Isle of Man.

Kılıçdaroğlu claimed in November 2018 that Erdoğan and some of his relatives had transferred large amounts of money to an offshore bank account in the tax haven Isle of Man, showing the documents and records of transactions.

However, a prosecutor decided in February 2018 not to proceed against Erdoğan and his family members and did not investigate the source of money although the prosecution office verified the veracity of the banking documents submitted by the CHP party.

Erdoğan's son Burak Erdoğan, brother Mustafa Erdoğan, brothers-in-law Ziya İlgen and Osman Ketenci and personal assistant Mustafa Gündoğan had received $15 million, according to the bank receipts shared by CHP's leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Erdoğan’s lawyers filed a complaint against the CHP leader following the documented allegations and demanded a compensation for the claims.

Answering the questions about the compensation fine for “insulting”, Kılıçdaroğlu has told the journalists’ on June 7, “Is not it normal? Who does hold the jurisdiction? This compensation aims to frighten me. I will eventually win that case. We will win it at the ECHR, if not in Turkey. Being instructed to frighten me, the judge assumes that he could frighten me with money. We will make ethics prevail over politics in this country, “ adding that the judge could not be a judge with that decision.
