As part of an investigation by the İstanbul chief public prosecutor’s office, Syrian-born Turkish journalist and academic Hüsnü Mahalli was arrested on December 15, 2016 for allegedly insulting state officials on Twitter.

Mahalli, who was taken to a hospital on Dec. 21 after falling ill in prison, has had health problems.

“My father’s blood values are getting worse. Our priority is his health and treatment. We also object to the results of imprisonment investigation,” Sevra Mahalli, daughter of Hüsnü Mahalli, said regarding Hüsnü Mahalli’s recent situation.

Journalist lawmakers of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) held a press conference on January 10 ‘Working Journalists Day’ in Turkey, and demanded Mahalli’s discharge on the grounds that he may be paralyzed.
