According to Hürriyet newspaper, Şener Avşar, 30, was seriously injured in a work accident in İstanbul while working as an aquarist in a shopping mall.

He was stung in his leg by a stingray while cleaning the aquarium. He could survive as the poison did not reach the upper part of his body, however, he suffered nerve loss in his leg.

After a month, Avşar was dismissed from the job by the management of the shopping mall. Stating he had returned from death as a result of lack of occupational safety, Avşar filed a criminal court against the shopping mall management. His lawyer, Salih Öz said they had filed a complaint to the shopping mall pressing them with charges for "reckless injury." Öz also said aquarists in Turkey work in poor conditions. One aquarist had died during a water evacuation in an aquarium.

Avşar said there was no work safety at the mall in which he worked.

"I have worked in different aquariums for five years, but there was no work safety at the last aquarium I worked at. Normally, an observer should monitor us while we are diving, but there was no observer there. Needles of stingray should be cut if they are living in an aquarium, but these stingray had needles," he said.
