Answering the parliamentary inquiry of Engin Özkoç, a deputy of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), İsmet Yılmaz, the Turkey's Minister of National Education, stated that 4,811 academics were suspended from their jobs in the academy following the coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

Yılmaz explained that 86 academics were given their public services back, while 2,221 academics were dismissed, 1,139 of whom were then assigned back to their jobs.

The Union of Public Employees in Health and Social Services (SES) held a press conference in the city of Denizli yesterday. The Union’s branch chairman, Halit Karabulut, noted that the state of emergency declared after the coup attempt, and the legislative decrees depending on the state, were used by the government to bypass the parliament and to dismiss those who oppose them from public services.

Karabulut also underlined that Prof. Dr Mehmet Zencir and Assoc. Prof. Dr Nergül Çördük, who were dismissed from their jobs at Pamukkale University with a legislative decree, were found by the Chief Prosecution to have no relations with any terrorist organisations. However, they have not been assigned back to their jobs yet.
