22 percent of Turkish citizens live under poverty line

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, 22 percent of the Turkish citizens live under poverty line

The statistical report entitled 'Statistics on Family, 2016' released by Turkish Statistical (TurkStat) Institute reveals that the proportion of the individuals living below the poverty line is 21.9%.

Analysis of poverty by household types shows that 29.3% of households with one adult with at least one dependent children lived under the poverty line.

The poverty rate of households having dependent children was 26.7%, it was 7.9% for the households having no dependent children. The dependent child is defined as a child who is under the age of 18 or in the age group of 18-24, economically inactive and living with at least one parent.

The poverty line is constructed by calculating 60% of the median equivalised household disposable income.

The report states that 60.4% of the individuals were the owner and 23.3% were the tenant in their residence.

POVERTY RATES ACCOMPANIED WITH RISING PROFITS

Meanwhile, the two leading bourgeois families of Turkey have declared the increase in their net profits in the first quarter of the year. Koç Holding, the largest industrial conglomerate in Turkey, harvested TL 1.1 billion ($300 million) and Sabancı Holding TL 670 million ($187 million). These figures correspond to 118% and 4.5% growth rates of net profits with respect to the same period in the previous year, respectively.
