A fishing boat carrying migrants sank off Turkey's coast in the Black Sea early Friday, killing at least 21 and leaving an estimated 15 others missing, the Turkish coast guard said.

At least 40 migrants were rescued by coast guard boats and commercial ships, the Coast Guard Command said in a statement. A pregnant woman miscarried during the tragedy.

A local official said the boat was believed to be carrying 70 migrants, most of whom were Iraqis.

Those rescued from the accident were taken under treatment at a mobile hospital set up on the Kefken coast. Some of the rescued migrants were rushed to hospitals in Kocaeli for detailed medical examinations.

There was no information on where they were heading to. Migrants, however, are increasingly trying to cross the Black Sea from Turkey to reach Romania, a European Union nation.
